After more than 15 years, the successful Civic once again has a five-door sibling. All new, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback strikes a sportier pose than its sedan and coupe relatives. The Civic's optional 1.5-liter turbo is a Civic Hatchback standard. Drivers will command 174 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. The car earns as much as 30 mpg city and 39 mpg highway, paying owners back at the pump. While many turbos aren't offered with a manual transmission, Honda pairs this fast-moving fuel-efficient unit with a standard stickshift and boosts the torque by doing so. Of course, many drivers will prefer the continuously variable transmission with paddle shifters. Again setting it apart from the regular Civic, the Hatchback has two unique editions, the Sport and Sport Touring. A special center-exit exhaust set-up boosts horsepower to 180.
Roomier than many rivals, the hatchback can claim best-in-class legroom with 36 inches for back row passengers. Drivers will appreciate an audio screen and a rearview camera. Higher trims add dual-zone climate control and the Honda touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Music can surround you with the available 540-watt, 12-speaker premium system. The Sport Touring edition comes dressed with red-accented instrument illumination and aluminum sport pedals. Cargo space rivals or surpasses that of many small crossovers. It has 25.7 cu.ft. before you fold the seats down. The Honda LaneWatch system, a brand exclusive, puts a camera in the passenger side mirror. Real-time images are broadcasting to the dash screen whenever the driver pushes the button or uses the right-hand turn signal. In addition, advanced driver-assist technology is available across the line-up.
The collision mitigation system works with the forward collision warning to reduce the chances that the Civic Hatchback driver will cause a rear-end collision. The lane keeping assist works with the lane departure warning to reduce side-swipe accidents. Likewise, the road departure mitigation system, a Honda exclusive, is ready to stop the car from wandering off the road. Adaptive Cruise Control has a Low-Speed Follow capability that makes it useful even when dealing with slow traffic. In a first for the Civic lineup, the hatchback is also offering Auto High-Beam Headlights.
